Like any other state, driving while under the influence of alcohol, or DUI, can be a serious problem in New Mexico that leads to traumatic injuries. Drunk drivers often drive on the wrong side of the road, drive too fast or too slow, run through red lights or have trouble stopping suddenly to avoid a collision. This can result in spine and back injuries, paralysis and even death. Each New Year, many of us resolve to make a difference in our community. With more of our neighbors here in Albuquerque in need than ever before, now is the perfect time to transform your well-intentioned resolution into a reality at Joy Junction. Community outreach organizations that provide shelter and food bank services to people in need stand ready to welcome you into their family of volunteers! Joining the effort to meet the needs of your neighbors is a wonderful way that you can pay forward kindnesses that you have received, and help grow the spirit of charity and compassion in our community.
If you have never participated as a volunteer before, maybe you are wondering how to get started. Fortunately, Albuquerque’s community outreach and charitable organizations welcome new volunteers and will provide any needed training. They will even work with your busy schedule to find an opportunity for you to get involved, even if on an occasional basis.
Charitable organizations rely on financial contributions to cover the operational costs of running Albuquerque’s shelters and food banks, and welcome donations of any amount. Another way you can contribute is by making a donation of goods or services. Here in Albuquerque, winter is an especially vulnerable time for our neighbors in need, who struggle with housing and heating costs in the colder months. By making a donation of clothing, particularly warm coats and heavy blankets, you can help warm bodies and lift spirits in your community.
Another important volunteering opportunity is to feed those who are vulnerable to hunger in our community. One great way to promote community awareness of the pervasive problem of food insecurity here in Albuquerque is to involve your school or business in partnering to support a food drive for Albuquerque’s food bank. Involving friends and family not only increases the effectiveness of your efforts, but also increases the community spirit of goodwill.
